Tragedy struck on Lake Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo last week, taking the lives of at least 38 people.
The boat was traveling from Minova to Bukavu when high winds caused it to capsize. According to Desire Yuma, the Red Cross director for South Kivu, their "team has found 11 survivors and recovered 38 bodies" and would continue the search in the following days.
The boat was carrying goods between locations and had taken on too many passengers for the journey. Sadly enough, accidents are common on Lake Kivu where maritime traffic is abundant and unregulated. The 11 rescued survivors were taken to a hospital in Goma for further treatment.
