Common Construction Accidents

By Smith & Stallworth   Oct. 28, 2010 8:53a

As the population increases, there is a higher demand for more housing, schools and shopping centers. As long as there is a demand for more buildings, there will always be individuals working in construction. Although it's enjoyable to move into a "new" home or shop at a clean and modern store, these modern day conveniences didn't come without somebody's blood, sweat and tears. Constructions remains one of the ten most deadly jobs in the nation today and make no mistake, those beautiful new walls didn't come without more than a few construction accidents.

According to The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, one out of ten construction site workers are injured every year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are approximately 150,000 construction site accident injuries annually and roughly 1,000 of them, resulted in death. Falls were reported as the number one factor in those injuries followed by contact with equipment.

Common Causes of Construction Accidents

Some common causes of construction accidents are: falling from heights, machinery, falling debris, ladders, electric shock, electrocutions, power line contact, trench collapses, explosions, welding accidents, defective power tools and defective hoists.

As there are countless ways to get injured or maimed on a construction site, there are just as many injuries that can be sustained in the course of working construction. Commonly reported construction injuries include; lifting injuries, head/brain injuries, amputation, exposure to toxic substances, repetitive motion injuries, slip, trip & falls and wrongful death. These injuries can leave the worker unable to work and permanently disabled or disfigured.
