Helpful Steps to Take After a Car Accident

Understanding what to do after a car accident is useful. This knowledge can help you make the right choices immediately following a collision, allowing you to positively impact your ability to seek justice against the person that caused your accident so you can obtain maximum financial compensation. At some point or another, almost every driver will be involved in a collision, whether a minor fender bender or serious accident. Following are some basic steps to take after a car accident:

  • If possible, remain at the scene of the accident. Leaving without exchanging driver/insurance information is actually a criminal offense.
  • Exchange information with the other driver or drivers involved.
  • Get the contact information of any witnesses present.
  • If you can, take pictures of the scene, the damage to your vehicle and your injuries. These may serve useful later. It is also helpful to take notes of what you recall about the collision.
  • Call 911 to report the collision.
  • Report the accident to your insurance company.
  • When law enforcement arrive on the scene, be helpful, but make sure that you do not admit liability for the collision. Even if you think you caused the accident, it is possible that the other driver or some outside factor was actually to blame.
  • If the other driver’s insurance company contacts you, do not give a statement about what caused the accident. They may only be looking to limit their policyholder’s responsibility for the accident.
  • As soon as possible, contact a Broward County personal injury attorney. In discussing the situation with an attorney, you can find out more about your legal rights and what to do at this point to properly handle your insurance claim and seek financial damages for your injuries, damage to our vehicle and more.
