Blood Pressure Medication Linked with Liver Damage

Lisinopril is a prescription drug used to treat high blood pressure. It is an ACE inhibitor which causes dilation of blood vessels which reduces the tension and volume of blood passing through veins and arteries. The drug was introduced in the 1990's after being developed by the drug company Merck. In recent years, it has been associated with cases of liver damage and liver failure which are often life-threatening conditions. Most of these cases involve a combination of lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide, which is a diuretic (causing the production of more urine).

In two cases, the drug was the direct cause of liver damage and failure which required the patients involved to need liver transplants. Both patients were young adults who had no prior history of liver problems. These patients only took the drug for a short time. Currently, warning labels on the prescription drug state that it can raise the risk of liver damage but does not state that it can cause liver failure. According to a pharmacology expert, the drug contains ingredients which can destroy the liver. A report from 1995 in PubMed announced that lisinopril can cause chronic liver damage. Side effects can include a rash, light-headedness, weakness, psoriasis, jaundice, little or no urination, fever, chills, and cough.

Dangerous pharmaceuticals and medical devices can lead to the development of serious medical conditions, as in the cases involved with the use of lisinopril mentioned above. Sometimes these drugs and devices are rushed to the market without adequate clinical trials and study to determine long-term dangers. In other instances, information about side effects is suppressed by drug companies. When innocent consumers are harmed due to the negligence of manufacturers or distributors, these manufacturers may be held accountable for damages.
