Study Shows Facts about Florida Motorcycle Crashes

Motorcyclists have been known to blame car drivers for the majority of motorcycle accidents. Car drivers often criticize motorcyclists for the way they weave in and out of traffic. Both sides blame the other but who is right? According to a study conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation, the fault lays with motorists 60 percent of the time in motorcycle accidents. The study was an analysis of ten years of motorcycle accidents in the state. Other data revealed by the study showed that more motorcyclists crash on their own independently of other motor vehicles than do car drivers. In comparing how often motorcyclists crash in single-vehicle accidents, it was found that their percentage was 34 percent in comparison to car drivers at 19 percent.

Most motorcycle crashes involve other vehicles, however. In severe and fatal motorcycle accidents where multiple vehicles are involved, most often the responsibility falls on the car driver. This is frequently the case in left-hand turn situations and in motorists pulling in front of motorcyclists. Motorcycle accidents are one of the few traffic accident statistics which are rising in Florida. In 2011, motorcycle accidents rose by 15 percent, motorcyclists killed rose by 18 percent, and motorcyclists injured rose by 7 percent from 2010 levels.
