Truck Collides With Bicyclist On Crowded Bridge
A woman was declared dead from her injuries last week after being rescued from the water, reports NBC News.
According to the police report, the accident occurred on Saturday, May 7th, in the morning. At just before 11:00 a.m. that day, a 46-year old woman and her husband were riding their bicycles together along the Sanibel causeway, traveling towards Sanibel Island. An experienced bicycle enthusiast and fitness instructor, the woman and her husband were known to make this trip nearly every weekend.
The woman was trailing slightly behind her husband when a truck heading the opposite direction suddenly swerved out of its lane and onto the shoulder. It narrowly avoided ramming the man, but collided straight into his wife, sending her careening into the guardrail, which she flipped over, falling off the bridge to the water below.
Bystanders Rescue Victim In Boat
A nearby boater in the San Carlos Bay was able to rescue her from the water, pulling her to shore and administering CPR until emergency responders arrived. Shortly after their arrival, the paramedic team pronounced her dead from her injuries. It is unclear from the police report whether her fatal injuries were caused by the impact with the water or by the collision with the truck.
Members of the Florida Highway Patrol say they are still investigating the incident. One trooper speculated to reporters that the driver of the truck, also a 46-year old woman, must have fallen asleep at the wheel, as she had to drift across an entire lane and the 8-foot wide shoulder to hit the woman. No charges have yet been filed against her, but they say this may change as the investigation continues.
