Worker Rescued after becoming Stuck in Chest-Deep Mud

By Greenberg & Stein, P.C.  Mar. 25, 2013 11:29a

A man working on new subway construction was rescued after spending over four hours in freezing cold mud that went up to his chest. The worker, 49-year-old J.B., was helping with the NYC Second Avenue subway project in a tunnel that is located 75 feet underground. He became trapped in mud as he walked across an area strewn with sheets of plywood and pipes. The man began sinking farther into the mud and the pipes and plywood began getting pressed up against him as he sunk. Fellow workers heard his cries for help and found him up to his chest in thick mud and freezing cold water. The mud had a lot of clay in it which made it impossible for him to pull himself out. Emergency rescue was called and fire fighters and paramedics arrived quickly on the scene but had to figure out a way to safely free J.B. from the mud without getting sucked in themselves. Over 150 fire fighters helped set up pulleys and lines and lumber to help extricate the man who was clearly in a great deal of pain. J.B. was finally freed from the freezing muck after four hours and swiftly transported to the hospital for treatment. He is expected to make a full recovery and vowed to get back to work as soon as possible.
