A construction worker died in Queens last week when working on an Astoria apartment building in 12-degree temperatures. The 42 year-old man fell through a floor and landed in a basement area where he struck his head on a steel girder. The construction accident occurred around 4 p.m. on January 24, 2013 at the Broadway site which was near 45th Street. The man was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The accident is under an investigation by the Department of Buildings; in the meantime, work has ceased on the project. OSHA (U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is also expected to investigate the accident.

One day prior to the Astoria accident, a construction worker working on the new NYPD academy in College Point, Queens was seriously injured in an accident. That worker fell 12 feet down an open elevator shaft and was rushed to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The construction industry has one of the highest rates of work-related injuries and deaths of all industries. According to federal government sources, fatal falls, slips, and trips killed 666 workers in 2011 while a total of 472 workers died who were struck by falling objects or by equipment at work.
