Increased Construction Means Increased Safety Precautions for Workers

According to the 2012 report from the New York Building Congress, the NYC construction industry experienced a five percent increase over 2011. Spending on new residential projects was up 54% and reached over $5 billion last year. Richard Anderson, president of the Building Congress, said, "The market's been climbing back and we could be as high as 15,000 units this year, which would still be half of the peak years. But it's a nice increase if you look at it the other way, that figure would be almost 200% of the bottom year." Total construction, residential and non-residential, was valued at $16.1 billion. The biggest New York City construction projects in 2012 were in the non-residential and public works arenas. The Herald Square Macy's took on a $400 million renovation while public works construction included the $325 million 96th Street subway station entrance and the $250 million Winter Garden renovation.

With the welcomed increase in construction projects throughout the city it is important to ensure that the workers making those projects possible are well cared for. During the 2011-2012 fiscal year, construction accidents in NYC resulting in injuries increased by 46% according to information from city records. The increase in building and jobs is welcomed but job site safety is crucial to ensuring that injuries and fatalities are reduced. Common causes of construction accidents trace back to carelessness, incompetence or outright recklessness on the part of a co-worker or employer. The result can be catastrophic injuries (severe head trauma, paralysis, amputation, permanent disability, etc.) or deaths. A construction accident lawyer may be able to help you with a claim if you were injured at the job site.
