The Center for National Truck and Bus Statistics at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute tracks truck accident statistics through its Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA) survey program. These survey statistics involve trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or more. According to the Center's 2007 Factbook, truck accident trends show an average of about 5,200 fatal truck crashes every year. The most common type of trucks involved in traffic accidents are tractors pulling one semitrailer, with a 59 percentage of accidents. From the years 2003 to 2007, Texas, California, and Florida had the greatest number of traffic accidents involving trucks. While the number of individuals who died in truck accidents decreased during these years, the number of truck drivers who died in such accidents increased.
Throughout 2003 to 2007, Florida had a total of 1,894 fatal truck accidents. The neighboring states of Georgia reported 1,234, Alabama reported 698, and Mississippi reported 427. Most of these accidents involved highway speeds of 55 miles per hour. The most frequent type of accidents were head-on crashes into the truck's lane, rear-end collisions, trucks running off the road, hitting objects in the road, and "other" reasons.
