The surviving family members of a man that was killed in a yacht race in the spring recently filed papers in what could become an emotionally heated lawsuit. The accident happened near an island off the coast of Mexico's Baja California as the yacht was traveling as part of an annual regatta from San Diego to Ensenada. The yacht was found in pieces near the Coronado Islands and none of the four individuals onboard survived. The owner of the 37-foot sailboat was piloting the vessel and it was his family that the survivors of another crewman on the boat are attempting to obtain insurance money from in connection to losses from the accident. While an official with U.S. Sailing announced findings that the boat ran aground on one of the Coronado Islands causing the fatal accident, the U.S. Coast Guard continues to investigate and has not released their official findings as yet. The family of the man captaining the boat was served papers to appear in court on November 13 in order to attend to matters concerning estate administration. An attorney for the family that filed the paperwork stated that this was the first step in a wrongful death claim. The two families which had been close friends and had mourned together after this devastating accident have now taken to berating each other on Facebook. Make sure your legal rights are protected if you were the victim of a boating accident or lost a loved one. A personal injury attorney may be able to help you with your claim.
