Off-Duty NYPD Officer Killed in Trucking Accident

By Hecht Kleeger & Damashek  Apr. 3, 2013 8:36a

An off-duty New York City police officer died in a crash that occurred around 2:30 in the morning last Monday. The officer was driving his pickup truck west on the Long Island Expressway when he stopped along the side of the road. A man driving a commercial delivery truck in the same direction crashed into the back of the 30-year-old officer's truck. Both vehicles caught fire after the collision. Paramedics and emergency personnel arrived and pronounced the officer dead at the scene. The driver of the commercial truck was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Investigators reported that they did not know why the officer was stopped in the right-hand lane or why the driver of the box truck was unable to avoid the deadly collision. Both vehicles have been impounded by police for the purposes of further investigation into the crash. Safety checks will be performed in an effort to determine how the fire started. If you lost a family member in a trucking accident or other accident then speak with a personal injury lawyer skilled in handling wrongful death and vehicle accident cases.
