Negotiations Underway in an Effort to Improve Assisted Living Facility Standards

By Weinstein & Scharf, P.A.  Jun. 18, 2012 12:59p

Nursing home neglect is a big deal in Palm Beach and throughout the state so when a recent news report stated that there were an alleged 70 deaths that occurred over the last 10 years in assisted living facilities due to neglect, the outcry could not be ignored. Despite apparent failures to get reform bills through legislation, Governor Rick Scott has persisted on the issue through continued sessions to discuss the matter. Members of the Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) work group along with those from the Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA), consumer advocates and representatives from several providers have pledged to negotiate the issue with the goal of arriving at a viable solution. Controversy and heated debates surround both current and past laws regarding the state's assisted living facilities. Some felt that industry providers were overly represented in some meetings resulting in bills that were slanted toward these providers rather than the residents at the facilities. Spokespersons for several of these providers and provider associations have stated that they do hold resident care and well-being in mind. If you are concerned that a loved one has been the victim of nursing home negligence or have another injury matter then speak with a Palm Beach personal injury attorney right away.

About Nursing Home Abuse

If you are concerned about the well-being of someone you care about who is a resident in a nursing home or assisted living facility, there are signs that should not be ignored. You should consult with a lawyer immediately if you have noticed any change in a loved one's behavior such as becoming anxious, nervous or withdrawn or if facility staff has suddenly deemed it necessary to confine the individual or keep them in restraints. Besides emotional or mood cues that there may be something wrong, physical evidence may include wounds, bruises, broken bones, fractures, bed sores, malnutrition, etc.
