Miami Family Struck Head On By Car Engaged In Illegal Street Race

After losing control during what was allegedly a high-speed drag race, a driver crashed headlong into a Ford Expedition carrying a family of four. A passenger in the racing car as well as two victims in the SUV lost their lives as a result of the accident, and the three survivors were hospitalized in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses and bystanders who watched the tragedy unfold told police that the accident was the result of what appeared to be an illegal race between three cars. Just before 2:00 AM on a Saturday in mid-October, three drivers were speeding eastward down Fagler Street, traveling at possibly over one hundred miles per hour. As they approached the intersection with 58th Avenue, one of the drivers lost control of his vehicle, a Toyota Scion, and spun into oncoming traffic.

A family of four in a Ford SUV found themselves in the path of the careening Scion, colliding head on at terrific speed. The impact sent several bodies flying, including both the 19-year old driver of the Scion and his 20-year old friend. The young passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The eldest son in the SUV was also ejected from the wreckage; the 15-year old boy is believed to have been killed on impact. Emergency personnel transported the mother, aged 42, and the younger boy, 12, to the hospital. The father, 43, who was driving during the accident, died shortly after reaching the medical center. The three survivors were all placed in the critical care ward at Jackson Memorial Hospital, but were able to pull through.

"You can see that the impact is so massive that it tossed this SUV, just tossed it around. The vehicle continued to rotate an additional three times before coming to a resting point," described a detective with the Miami Police Department. "It just tore off the Toyota's engine block. It pushed in the entire engine compartment of the Expedition, into it's own passenger compartment."

Investigators are attempting to identify the other drivers who took part in the alleged drag race. Thanks to several eyewitnesses, as well as the help of surveillance footage from nearby businesses, they believe they have several leads on locating the owners of the vehicles involved.
