Tips to Determine the Quality of Care in a Nursing Home

By Williamson Law Firm  Apr. 1, 2011 7:12p

If you are looking around for a quality nursing home for a loved one or are perhaps questioning the quality of one where a loved one already resides, you may find the following tips to be quite valuable. For example, observe and ask the staff, what type of activities do the residents participate in at the facility? Check to see if there are a variety of planned activities like music, exercise, games movies, lectures, local outings, shopping, crafts and so forth. A good facility will have these on a schedule.

A poor facility will not have such a thing and the residents will be left to themselves with minimal activities like TV, card games and may be more heavily sedated on drugs to keep them less active. This in itself can be a form of nursing home abuse and neglect. Look at the demeanor of the residents; are they socially engaged or are they bored and apathetic.

Check to see how many complaints were filed against the home in the last year or two. Ask what the complaints were for and if you can see the reports. Do keep in mind that if reports have been filed and the problems were taken care of, it may no longer be an issue. You can also ask to see the most recent inspection report from the state on the facility.

It is your right to see the report and this is comprehensive enough to allow you to see what is occurring in the home. You will get an idea as to what the weaknesses are in the facility and what corrections may have occurred to handle them. These are just a few tips for determining the quality of care in a nursing home but they will present you with valuable information if you carry these actions out.
