Authorities Say A Long Beach Automobile Accident Was Caused By Racing

An accident took place just after midnight in Long Beach last Sunday, taking the lives of three of the six participants in what police claim was an illegal street race. According to initial reports released by law enforcement officials, the collision occurred at the intersection of 55th Place and Ocean Boulevard, shortly after midnight on Sunday. The cars were both allegedly engaged in a race, which ended abruptly when the two vehicles slammed into one another, sending three of the four occupants of one car flying into the street.

Authorities were alerted to the incident shortly before the collision, but were unable to arrive in time to stop the crash. The victims were driving in what witnesses described as a black Ford Mustang, racing with a second vehicle, a stolen Ford Taurus driven by two teenage boys.

Three Occupants Succumb to Injury, Including a Middle-Aged Mother of Five

After ramming into each other, the Mustang spun off the other car and collided with a stone signpost, ejecting three passengers. The eighteen-year-old driver of the car remained inside, but died at the scene before emergency paramedics could arrive.

Two of those thrown from the car also lost their lives, and the last, a nineteen-year-old man, is in critical condition at a nearby hospital. One of the victims was a thirty-two-year-old woman, whom friends say leaves behind five young children.

The teenage boys in the stolen Taurus fled the scene of the accident, but were later apprehended and arrested. Police are waiting to complete their investigation before charging the youths. It is not clear whether alcohol was a factor in the incident. Police are not sure how fast the vehicles were traveling during the race.
