Good Samaritan Struck By Another Vehicle While Helping At Crash Site

While attempting to aid an injured victim at the scene of an accident, a man suffered severe injuries when a driver crashed into him, forcing medical personnel to sever his leg. Despite his loss, however, the Good Samaritan says he would do it all over again if it meant he saved someone's life.

According to the reports filed in the aftermath of the incident, the initial crash took place by the 3200 block of Old Boynton Road, no far from North Congress Avenue. While the driver sat dazed and bleeding by his Nissan truck, the Good Samaritan approached the scene in his car. Telling his wife to stay sitting in the vehicle, the man got out and approached the victim. He helped the concussed man to his feet, getting him out of harm's way just as an oncoming driver in a Porsche crashed into the truck, crushing the Good Samaritan between the two vehicles.

By the time officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene and began to help the man, the damage to his lower body was already catastrophic. In addition to irreparable injury to his right leg, he also fractured several bones in his left foot.

Victim Files Personal Injury Suit Seeking Thousands In Damages

At a press conference, the amputee told reporters that it was worth losing his leg to save the victim's life. Saying that it would have been a "tragic end" for the driver had he not intervened, the Samaritan said he was content to pay the price he did. His doctors say the process of recovery will be long and arduous, but that he should be able to walk again with help from a prosthetic leg.

Despite his generally hopeful and positive outlook, the amputee told reporters that he cannot help but be angry over the Porsche driver's negligence and carelessness. He said he believes that the driver was talking on his phone or texting just before the crash, which left him distracted. With the help of an attorney, he is suing the man for at least $15,000 in damages, possibly more. Police say that no criminal charges have been filed in connection to the case.
