The death of another teenager which occurred last year has resulted in a second lawsuit against the makers of Monster Energy Drink. The 19 year-old California boy died on July 1, 2012 after drinking two 16 oz. cans of the drink in the 24 hours prior to his death. He had also been in the habit of drinking two cans per day in the previous three years. The cause of his death was pronounced to be cardiac arrhythmia and cardiomyopathy. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle, in which the muscle becomes enlarged leading to a weakened ability to function. Cardiac arrhythmia consists of a disruption of the normal rhythm of the heartbeat.
The boy's death and lawsuit follows an earlier death of a 14 year-old California girl who died in 2011 after drinking two cans of the drink within 24 hours. The American Medical Association (AMA) recently voted to endorse banning the drink for those under the age of 18 and banning companies who make such drinks from marketing to teens. According to the AMA, the drink contains massive amounts of caffeine which can lead to heart problems. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has reported that hospitalizations connected with complications from these drinks doubled in the year 2011 from 2007. According to ABC News, the FDA has gotten several adverse reports concerning Monster Energy drinks, including reports of five deaths and a heart attack.
