Driving Safety During Flooding

Tucson Woman

According to Tucson Fire Capt. Barrett Baker, a woman was killed when the vehicle she was in was swept into a raging torrent of Alamo Wash in a residential area. Baker said the swift-water rescue team that was in the process of answering a 911 call spotted the vehicle trapped beneath a bridge. That was just moments before the vehicle was carried three blocks away. "The car got swept downstream and basically disappeared," Baker said. "We're talking 10 feet of water. ... We've got flooding everywhere." The woman has still not been identified.

Pinal County Woman

Sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney said a 69-year-old man in Pinal County, dialed 911 shortly after noon to report both he and his wife were trapped in their Honda Accord. They had gotten trapped while trying to cross Cadillac Wash near Oracle Junction. According to Gaffney, the couple tried to escape from the vehicle as water poured in. The man was able to make it to the safety of the shore. But, his 76-year-old wife was found about a half-mile downstream. She did not survive.

During Rainy Seasons

In situations such as these, it's best to try and stay as far away from the water as possible. Practicing "no driving" is sometimes safer than practicing "safe driving." If you need to get somewhere when there is flooding, try to find a route that takes you away from the flooded areas, or decide to stay put. If you must go out, make sure that your headlights and taillights, as well as your windshield wipers are in proper working condition. Also, avoid all road closures. If you see flood waters, avoid them. Do not try to drive through them, as you could get caught if there is a heavy onslaught of rain.
