New Booster Seat Law - Improved Safety in Car Accidents

Hundreds of Children Injured and Killed

According to AAA, hundreds of children are injured and/or killed while traveling on Arizona’s roadways per year. The reason? The improper use of safety seats, or the complete lack of a safety seat. According to cited statistics, in 2010, all of the 5- to 8-year-olds who were killed in car crashes in Arizona died because they had not been properly restrained. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a child's fatality risk can be reduced by up to 71 percent with the proper use of a safety seat.

Booster Seats

Booster seats generally cost about $20. They are widely available. Proper use is crucial. Seats with our without backs are available. If your vehicle has low seat backs or no head restraints, you'll want to get a high back booster seat that can provide whiplash protection for your child passenger. A booster seat does not require any special installation and does not need to be fastened or tied down. You simply need to place the booster seat in the backseat of the car, have the child sit on it, and then buckle it. The main purpose of the booster seat is to raise the child up to a height that will make the seat belt more effective. The seat belt should fit across the upper things and not ride up onto the child's stomach. The shoulder belt should sit comfortably on the child's shoulder - not falling off the arm or across the neck.

Violating New Law

Not using a booster seat is now a primary offense under the new law. What this means is that you can be pulled over just for violating this new law. The fine is $50.
