Unusual Product Recalls Should Spur Caution for Consumers

By Law Office of Leonard Matsuk  Jun. 15, 2011 10:45a

When we as consumers purchase products, more often than not we assume they are safe and have no anticipation there will be any problems. A majority of the time, problems do not arise, but due to a certain percentage of products that are defective, accidents do happen - some in a very unexpected way. The following examples give proof of how unexpected and out of the ordinary some product recalls can be.

A Few Unusual Recalls

  • Most people heard about the recent recall on Children's Tylenol, a product that parents all over the country may have never suspected would need a recall.
  • Earlier this year, Mazda had to recall 52,000 of its Mazda 6 cars (four cylinder versions only) as a result of spider's nests they discovered that took a liking to a part of the fuel system. Their nests could have restricted fuel lines with potential fires resulting and Mazda did not want to take any chances, thus the recall was done.
  • Another recent recall involved the wel- known children's toy, the Easy Bake Oven. Children were getting their hands caught in the oven and were suffering burns.  Models which were sold after 2006 were the only ones involved in the recall.
  • Similac baby formula recently had to engage in a product recall on a line in Michigan after consumers found beetles and beetle larvae in the powder. Company officials were of the opinion that the contamination came from the customer's own home and they pointed out that beetles and their larvae were not very likely to cause any real health problems.

As consumers, we need to be aware of the fact that defective products do exist and exercise caution as a standard of operation when using any kind of product. Testing procedures and quality control for the various products that we assume are safe are sometimes lacking and unfortunately, injuries are the result.
