Edgewater – A young mother is involved in a drunk driving accident on Ridgewood Avenue with her 1-year-old infant inside the car, she was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and faces child abuse charges.

Lacey Marie Whitaker, 22, of Westover, Alabama, has been charged with DUI, DUI with property damage or injury, reckless driving, aggravated child abuse and willfully refusing to sign a citation according to police records. The young mother was released from Volusia County Branch Jail after posting the $4,500 in bail.

Whitaker and her male companion had been drinking at a bar celebrating Bike Week, according to the investigator’s report. She had reportedly consumed five beers and took Xanax and Colotapin.  The officers at the scene claim that she was so intoxicated; she didn’t even know where she was. She supposedly thought she was in Daytona Beach and told the officer that she had stopped drinking once he pulled her over, according to the police report. When the officer told her that her car crashed and that he hadn’t stopped her, her response was, “I did?” If you have been a victim in a drunk driving accident, contact a personal injury attorney today.

Whitaker was driving Southbound on Ridgewood Avenue in her Honda Accord above the speed limit around 8:35 p.m. when she crashed into an oncoming Volkswagen Jetta in the midst of making a U-turn. Upon impact, the Jetta flipped over. Whitaker continued down the roadway for another 75 feet before coming to a stop. When the officer opened her car door, she began bawling. The officer’s report says she had glassy blood shot eyes and reeked of alcohol. When she exited the Honda, she was so inebriated, she could not stand up. The officer heard the cries of an infant coming from the rear of the vehicle, when he looked in the back, he saw the baby. The officer had to help the mother and child out of the car, away from the road, to safety.
