Handling Nursing Home Abuse

By J.D. Smith  Jul. 2, 2010 9:37a

If you have a loved one that is recovering or living in a nursing home and you suspect some sort of abuse or neglect is happening, you need to contact a personal injury attorney who is experienced with nursing home abuse. Many nursing home facilities are professionally run, are kept clean and treat their patients with the utmost care. In some circumstances, however, you have the few who are not and demonstrate abuse or neglect. Keep in mind that neglect of patients is in fact a form of abuse and is often the most common type of abuse that occurs.

One Example Out of Many Types of Abuse

Several years ago a 76 year old Longview woman died in a Washington nursing home after a head injury from falling out of her bed. Her head injury was left undiagnosed for over two days despite apparent concussion symptoms, and she was found comatose. She was then transferred to a regular hospital and died two days later. She originally had been admitted to the nursing home after a stroke and was recovering well. The incident happened as a result of a nursing home assistant leaving the patient unattended which was contrary to the patient's care plan. A 1.9 million dollar settlement resulted out of the abuse case.

Incidents like this are unfortunately too common resulting from care givers who are not trained well enough or who are simply negligent.
