Study on Prescription Drugs Reveals Most Violence Inducing

By Shoop Law  May. 9, 2011 12:04p

A study recently published by The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) in the journal PLoS One, spotlighted the top prescription drugs that cause patients to become violent. This is useful information to have as many of these medications are being heavily marketed to the public on a daily basis. Amongst these top ten most dangerous drugs are several antidepressants namely Pristiq (also known as desvenlafaxine), Prozac (also known as fluoxetine) and Paxil (or paroxetine).

Negative Side Effects Cause Concern

Many of the most widely marketed antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs have side effects that are cause for concern creating not only physical problems, but psychological problems and according to the ISMP report, the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System shows that homicides are linked to many of these popular drugs.

The Top Ten List

Following is the list of drugs found to be the most likely to cause violence as reported in Time:

  1.  Varenicline (Chantix) - an anti-smoking drug
  2.  Fluoxetine (Prozac) - an antidepressant
  3.  Paroxetine (Paxil)  - An antidepressant
  4.  Amphetamines (ADHD drugs)
  5. Mefoquine (Lariam) - A drug for treating Malaria
  6. Atomoxetine (Strattera) - An ADHD drug
  7. Triazolam (Halcion) - A drug for the treatment of insomnia
  8. Fluvoxamine (Luvox) - A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drug
  9. Venlafaxine (Effexor) - An antidepressant for the treatment of anxiety disorders.
  10. Desvenlafaxine (Pristiq) - An antidepressant drug

Many drugs are effective for handling specific physical conditions but there are also harmful ones that cause more problems with side effects than the conditions they were meant to handle. In some cases, insufficient testing is the culprit or tainted clinical study results that mislead both doctors and patients as to effectiveness and harmful side effects.
