Car Explodes after Serious Two-Car Collision

By Clawson & Clawson LLP October 23, 2013

A car was engulfed in flames after being rear-ended by a car driven by a suspected intoxicated driver. The crash happened in Colorado Springs on Highway 115 at the intersection with Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard. The exact circumstances of the collision were not made available but it was reported that a man, J.M., driving a black sedan crashed at high speed into the back of another sedan causing serious injury to the male driver of the car that was rear-ended. The rear-ended vehicle caught fire but fire rescue and emergency medical personnel were able to get the victim safely out of the car. He was taken to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment of injuries including a broken vertebra. Shortly after a fire truck pulled up close to the flame-engulfed sedan, the trunk of the vehicle exploded. Debris from the car went flying in several directions causing damage to the fire truck and a police cruiser. A second, smaller explosion occurred about 30 seconds later. Luckily, no one was injured when the vehicle exploded and fire fighters were able to put the flames out. It turned out that the sedan had two oxygen tanks in the trunk which had exploded after the vehicle caught on fire from the impact by the other car. Consult with a personal injury lawyer skilled in handling car accident cases if you were hurt in a crash that was not your fault.

Driver Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

J.M., the driver of the sedan that rear-ended the exploding car, was not seriously injured in the crash and was checked over by EMTs before being released to police custody. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. El Paso County has the second highest motor vehicle accident rate annually in the state. A large number of these wrecks are caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. DUI-caused accidents are prime examples of crashes that could have easily been avoided had the driver not chosen to be so reckless with his or her own life and the lives of others.
