Florida is Number One for False Car Accident Claims

According to recent reports, the state of Florida now ranks number one in the country for filing questionable auto insurance claims. Statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau show that the state has an alarming number of what appears to be staged car accidents.  In 2010, the number of staged collisions increased by 77% compared to 2009.

At the top of the list are Tampa, Orlando, and Miami. These cities have the top spots for false collision and claims. However, reports show that a large number of false claims are being filed in Palm Beach County as well West Palm Beach.

Special Agent Fred Burkhardt of the South Florida Major Medical Fraud Task Force said, "It doesn't take a lot of expertise. It doesn't take a lot of skill. You just need to provide your car and you're good to go."

Unfortunately, many people are taking advantage of Florida's personal injury protection law which pays car accident victims up to $10,000 in medical claims anytime a person is injured in an accident without conflict over who is at fault, which is a requirement in most states. In the state of Florida, insurance companies pay for victims' treatment even if other drivers were at fault.

Were you hurt during an auto accident?  If so, now is the time to consult with a personal injury attorney who can help.
