Woman Settles Injury Lawsuit against Target for $7 Million

An 80 year old woman from Rosemont recently settled her personal injury lawsuit against Target and a mechanical door company for $7 million.  According to reports, the woman filed her lawsuit after being knocked to the ground by a mechanical door that was defective in a Target store.  The incident occurred in Rosemont on June 21, 2007.

After being knocked down, 80 year old Claire Putman sustained brain injuries that left her with "cognitive defects".  Due to the severity of her injuries, Putman had to be placed in a nursing home.

In the lawsuit, Putman's lawyer said that the elderly woman was walking into a local Target when the door malfunctioned and knocked her to the floor.  While falling, Putman hit her head and was repeatedly struck by the door which continued to open and close.

Prior to being injured, Putman's lawyer said that the victim was a primary caregiver for her 59 year old daughter who had "special needs".   He lawyer also said, "As a result of what happened two years ago, Claire has been robbed of that ability to take care of her oldest daughter, as well as to enjoy the remaining years of her life the way she had planned."

The lawyers for Putman argued that Target failed to maintain and to inspect its mechanical doors.  The lawyers also say that the corporation did not follow safety guidelines provided by the door manufacturer, Besam USA.
