Hotel Fined $40K for Failing to Provide Workers' Comp Insurance

Nevele Hotel in Ellenville, NY has been fined $40,000 for failing to provide workers' compensation insurance for its employees.

Ulster County Court Judge Michael Bruhn ordered the hotel to pay $35,278 to the Workers' Compensation Board in restitution, costs, penalties, and charges. The hotel was also ordered to pay $5,000 in fines. If the hotel commits another violation, they could be charged with a fine of up $100,000.

The New York Workers' Compensation Board had previously sanctioned the hotel three times for not providing adequate coverage.  An attorney representing the hotel acknowledged that the hotel had failed to pay more than $35,000 in workers' compensation insurance premiums.

"Like many other businesses in this economy, (the hotel) came upon some hard times and fell behind in its payments," the attorney said. "They are doing everything they can to remedy this situation."
