Driver Loses Control, Collides With Gas Tanker On Highway

After four months investigating a high-speed collision on Florida State Road 528, authorities say they remain unclear what caused the tragic crash.

State Troopers admit that they may never learn the full story regarding the accident. In a report released by the FHP, they announced all the details they had learned in their four-month long investigation. The results indicate that the driver of a borrowed truck, a nineteen-year-old native of Merritt Island, was likely the party at fault.

According to the document, the woman was driving a Ford F-150 she had borrowed from a friend in order to help her parents move. After finishing with this, she was traveling to Port St. John in order to pick up the children of the truck owner from school.

Tanker Spills Flaming Gasoline Across Bridge Overpass

Law enforcement officers say they discovered three calls had been sent from the drivers cell-phone immediately prior to the accident, from 2:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is suspected that this activity may have caused her to become distracted and lose control of her truck.

Just after three in the afternoon, the F-150 spun out of control, overcorrected and sideswiped the trailer of a Pipeline Transportation Tanker. Both vehicles overturned, crashing through the guardrail and falling off the overpass at North Courtenay Parkway. The tanker exploded, and flaming gasoline engulfed the bridge, completely destroying it.

Both the woman and the forty-two-year-old driver of the gas tanker were killed in the explosion. An eyewitness was driving under the overpass when the collision occurred and had her vehicle doused in flaming gasoline, but emerged unharmed. Her testimony proved valuable to the investigators in attempting to piece together the story.

Officials with the FHP say they are still unclear precisely what caused the driver of the truck to lose control. The road was slightly wet that afternoon, but it was not raining, they said, nor did toxicology reports find any alcohol or other intoxicants in the system of either driver.
