California Traffic Safety Facts

Auto accidents are the number one cause of personal injury claims and lawsuits in California and throughout the nation. While traffic accidents have declined overall across the country in the past decade, they are still a significant source of injury and death. Many factors are involved in traffic accidents, including distracted drivers, drunk drivers, drivers who disobey speed limits and other traffic laws, mechanical failures or defects, and simple driver error or carelessness. In a survey done by the California Office of Traffic Safety, the biggest safety problem on California roads as identified by drivers was speeding or aggressive driving. The most serious distraction for drivers, according to the survey, was cell phone conversations, whether handheld or hands-free.

14 percent of drivers admitted that they had regularly talked on a handheld cell phone while driving within the last 30 days while close to 30 percent had talked on a hands-free phone while behind the wheel. 45.8 percent of drivers surveyed stated that they had made a driver error while talking on a cell phone while 54.6 percent reported they had been hit or nearly hit by a driver talking on a cell phone or texting. Driver error due to cell phone conversations, whether handheld or hands-free, remains a clear risk for traffic accidents to both the conversing driver and other drivers and passengers sharing the road.
