A man who is suspected of striking a cop car, leaving the officer severely injured, has had several new charges appended to his previous offenses. Authorities have added hit-and-run and failure to comply with DUI testing to the list.

According to initial reports released by law enforcement officials in relation to the accident, the crash is believed to have taken place on Friday, January 4th, at approximately 11:25 PM. The defendant, a 45-year old man from Kennesaw, was traveling in his 2011 Hyundai Sonata on Interstate 75 at Northside Parkway when he began to approach a parked police vehicle.

The victim, an officer with the Atlanta Police Department, was parked in the emergency lane helping to guide traffic. According to police reports, the suspect failed to stop in time and collided at great speed into the police cruiser. The victim had to be extracted from the wreckage of his vehicle with the help of emergency paramedics.

Additional Offenses Added To Rap Sheet

Authorities allege that the defendant fled the scene of the accident on foot. He was chased down by several law enforcement officers and taken to the Fulton County Jail, where he was hit with a slew of charges, including reckless driving, DUI, serious injury by motor vehicle, failure to maintain lane, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to wear a seatbelt.

In addition to that litany of offenses, officials report that they have added more after additional investigation. The defendant is now also charged with hit-and-run, driving in the emergency lane, and refusing a DUI test. He faces a total of nine charges in connection with the accident. Authorities say he is being held in lieu of $58,000 bail bond.

The victim was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at Grady Hospital, where he is being treated for multiple broken bones. A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department said that the officer was in serious but stable condition, and is expected to survive his injuries.
