What You Should Know About No-Fault Insurance Coverage

By Chris Hoffmann  Feb. 12, 2015 11:41a

Always be aware of your rights so that you are not cheated out of getting full compensation.

After you have recovered from the shock and trauma caused by a car accident, you can start the claims process to receive compensation and insurance coverage for your injuries and any property damage sustained. It is essential to be aware of your rights so that the insurance company does not short you for any no-fault benefits that you may be entitled to.

No-Fault Coverage Benefits

The benefits under no-fault coverage may include the following:

  • payment for medical bills and prescription costs
  • attendant care services payment
  • compensation for lost wages
  • payment for domestic help
  • replacement services payments
  • case management services
  • modifications to home due to medical condition
  • survivor loss benefits

The benefits stated above may be offered regardless of who has been at-fault. Insurance adjusters may try to cut corners by not informing the victim of a car accident about the no-fault benefits he or she is entitled to. The victim must be aware to claim all entitled benefits or hire a St. Louis car accident attorney.

What Your Insurance Company Does Not Want You to Know

  • The insurance company generally does not have a legal obligation to explain to you the benefits you are entitled to after a car accident. In many cases, the insurance adjuster will not inform you about the benefits.
  • The no-fault benefits are not dependent on fault liability and even if you are at-fault in a car accident, you are still entitled to the benefits.
  • The no-fault benefits are applicable even if you do not have your own insurance policy.
  • If you have sustained an injury that has lifetime repercussions, you will continue to receive the applicable benefits for the same for life.
  • If you have a disability resulting from the accident, you will continue to receive a percentage of your wages.
  • If you have been a seasonal employee or have been unemployed but looking for a job at the time of the accident, you are still eligible for wage loss benefits.
  • If you require assistance in household chores due to the disability caused by the accident, you are eligible to receive payment for domestic help hired for household chores, such as cleaning the house, grass cutting, laundry, or cooking. These benefits are applicable even if a family member assists you instead of hired help.
  • If your family member or a friend is taking care of you during recovery, you are entitled for compensation of payment that would have to be paid to a professional caretaker.
  • If your condition requires your home to be modified, the insurance company must pay for the alterations.
