Driving While "Intexticated" - Texting While Driving

By Doan Law Firm  Feb. 16, 2011 2:04p

Driving while "intexticated" is a new phrase used to describe the dangerous act of driving while text messaging. This form of driver distraction may leave a driver prone to involvement in a car accident. If you or someone you know has been injured by a driver who was texting while driving, you may be able to recover financial compensation for your injuries.

Since the beginning of the automobile, drivers have been prone to distraction. Talking to passengers, looking at scenery and adjusting the radio are all common scenarios that have caused a vast number of collisions through the years. Today, technology provides new distractions. This includes in-vehicle navigation systems and perhaps one of the most dangerous distractions of all: text messaging. Cell phones are a key source of distraction for drivers, and this extends far beyond talking on the phone while driving.

Sending and receiving text messages, or "texting", is a more recent form of distraction that has been considered just as dangerous as drunk driving. In fact, this designation has resulted in a new term being coined. "Intexticated" is a term used to describe a driver who operates a vehicle while texting. It is often used to describe teenagers, but both teen and adult drivers may be guilty of this practice.

Driving while intexticated is a particularly dangerous practice because it affects all three different aspects of a driver's focus: mental attention, visual attention and physical attention. The driver will be thinking about what he/she is doing (mental attention), will need to look at the phone to read/compose the text message (visual attention) and will need to take one or even both hands off the steering wheel to handle the phone (physical attention).

Texting while driving is dangerous, and if a negligent driver caused an accident due to this practice, you may have the right to seek significant financial compensation for the injuries you or a loved one sustained.
