Driver Turns into Oncoming Traffic

A high-speed accident on Florida State Road 54 left the passengers of a minivan injured, with two young children needing immediate medical attention following rescue by emergency personnel.

According to the report filed by the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision is believed to have occurred in the afternoon on Tuesday, July 26th. A minivan was traveling along State Road 54 heading eastbound. Investigators believe that the driver, a sixteen-year old Wesley Chapel native, was attempting to make a left turn near Curley Road when she moved into the path of a semi-trailer truck heading west.

The truck driver made an attempt to avoid the collision, but was unsuccessful, slamming at great speed into the minivan and sending it spinning across the road.

Tampa Youths Airlifted To Hospital

Thanks to the swift arrival of emergency response units, the two severely injured young passengers of the minivan were able to be airlifted away to St. Joseph's Hospital, a nearby medical center. The two children, twelve and five years old, were reportedly in stable condition.

The other four passengers of the minivan suffered minor injuries, but these were not deemed severe enough to merit hospitalization. The driver was released, along with her three family members, after speaking to Highway Patrolmen at the scene. Additionally, the driver of the semi-truck was shaken but uninjured.

Investigators are looking into the accident to determine if it warrants charges against either party. Highway Patrol members credited the low injury count to the fact that every victim of the collision was wearing a seatbelt.
