Bicycle Accident Statistics at a Glance

Bicycles have been around longer than automobiles. They remain a healthy and faster solution to getting places on foot. Bicycles are not only reserved as modes of transportation for children too young to drive, adults find their many recreational uses appealing as well. Unfortunately, bicycles share the road with automobiles and much to bicycle riders dismay, they must accept inherent dangers presented by motor vehicles if they are to enjoy the many benefits of bicycle riding. According to 2009 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (released in 2010):

  • 630 bicyclists died on US roads in 2009
  • Of the 630, 74 were 14 or younger
  • There were 51,000 bicyclists injured in traffic in 2009
  • One-seventh of cyclists killed, were children between the ages of 5 and 15 years old
  • The average age of bicyclists injured on US roads is 31
  • Most all fatal crashes were urban (69%)
  • Most fatalities occurred between the hours of 5 and 9 pm
  • Most fatalities occurred during the summer months of June and September

Alcohol involvement, either by the driver or the bicyclist was reported in over one-third of the traffic fatality crashes, in which case the cyclist died. A whopping 87% of bicyclists killed or injured were male, and most of them were between the ages of 5 and 44 years of age.
