Nursing home abuse can take on many forms, any of which can be devastating to an elderly person. It can be in the form of physical abuse, psychological abuse or even financial abuse. Physical abuse or neglect is the most common form but other forms occur just as well, though many of these abuses go unreported.
One Example
A recent incident in the state of Georgia gives testimony of a case involving financial elderly abuse. A woman who ran an assisted living center apparently stole ten thousand dollars from an elderly man. The woman, 39 year old Veronica Martin, turned herself into the police authorities after the theft. Police found from the investigation that she posed as a family member and gained access to the victim's financial assets and records. Another 40,000 was missing from the man's account, unaccounted for. Lack of proper screening and monitoring of employees is an additional problem that both nursing homes and assisted living centers have and many abuses occur as a result.
Nationwide Investigation
As an indication of just how widespread the problem of nursing home abuse is; a national advocacy group for nursing home residents' rights called The Nursing Home Complaint Center is launching a nationwide investigation into abuse and wrongful deaths at nursing homes. They believe that nursing home abuse and neglect is at epidemic levels resulting in wrongful deaths. They are targeting inadequate staff levels as being a major factor in the abuse and wrongful deaths.
