Motorcycle Accident Facts and Conclusions

By Pacific Attorney Group  Apr. 16, 2012 3:16p

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Center for Statistics and Analysis has determined that, while motorcycles account for a mere .04 percent of all miles traveled by vehicles in the U.S., motorcyclist fatalities account for more than 10 percent of all traffic deaths. In 2005, accident fatalities were 5.4 percent higher for motorcycle riders than for drivers and passengers of cars, SUVs, and light trucks. Based on the number of miles traveled, a motorcyclist is 37 times more apt to be killed in a traffic accident than the occupants of passenger cars. This is a troubling statistic and one that every person who climbs aboard a motorcycle should understand.

The vast majority of those who operate motorcycles are hurt or killed in two-vehicle accidents with a passenger car. The most alarming statistic in those published by the NHTSA concerning motorcycle accidents is that in the fatalities involved in collisions between motorcycles and passenger cars, motorcyclists died 90 percent of the time as opposed to 10 percent of passenger car occupants. This statistic alone shows how dangerous it is to be involved in a motorcycle accident and what the odds are of death from injuries which result. Further statistics show that the majority of these accidents occur in urban areas.
