Pedestrians are at risk for being injured by a motor vehicle whenever they share the road with an automobile. Unfortunately, driver distraction or inattention is usually the cause for pedestrian accidents. Driver distraction would entail doing something else while driving such as texting while driving, reading while driving or any other activity that would take either the driver's mind, eyes or hands off the wheel.
According to reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 4,092 pedestrians lost their lives in pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents and 59,000 more people were injured in 2009. That staggering number means that nearly one pedestrian is involved in a motor vehicle collision every 8 minutes. In addition, many more pedestrians visit emergency rooms each year, who never report their pedestrian crash to the police. Below are some more facts about pedestrian accidents as reported by the National Highway Traffic Association and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:
- On average, every 2 hours a pedestrian loses their life in a motor vehicle accident
Every 8 minutes, a pedestrian is injured in a traffic accident
- 11 percent of fatalities in motor vehicle accidents involve pedestrians
In general, pedestrian fatalities are higher in urban areas. This is due to the fact that there are simply more people and vehicles on the road, thus increasing the chances of injury or death occurring to pedestrians. According to the National Safety Council, approximately 85.7 percent of all non-fatal pedestrian accidents in the United States occur in urban areas and 14.3 occur in rural areas.
As per statistics, males are far more likely to be involved in a pedestrian/motor vehicle accident than females. Approximately 69 percent of pedestrian fatalities are male; in addition, the male pedestrian rate of injury is 58 percent more than it is for females.
