Freak Accident Leaves Family Bereaved

Almost a year after a horrific car accident during the July 4th fireworks display, the family of a victim files suit against the city for negligence, reports the Santa Clarita Valley Signal.

A woman was standing in the crowd on Valencia Boulevard that night, joining hundreds in watching the display of fireworks lighting up the night sky in celebration and remembrance of the nation’s founding. She was there with two of her children, watching the grand finale, when a high-speed collision sent a car flying into the crowded sidewalk, wounding her sons and leaving her fatally injured.

Now, as the city begins planning for this year’s festival, the family is filing a complaint, arguing that lax regulation directly led to the wrongful death of their mother and wife.

Suit Names City And Multiple Businesses As Culpable

The complaint, an 18-page document detailing the specific wrongs by each defendant, was filed in the L.A. Superior Court by a Los Angeles personal injury attorney representing the victim’s loved ones.

Names listed by the document include the city of Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County, and the owners of the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall at which the show was held.

“This accident could have been prevented,” said the lawyer prosecuting the case, “by simply closing Valencia Boulevard to traffic while the fireworks were taking place or taking other simple precautions.”

Citing the failure of the city to come up with a “traffic- or crowd management plan”, the complaint argues that city officials and organizers were negligent in ensuring proper safety precautions were taken.
