Chase Ends In Near Fatal Accident

A sheriff’s deputy chased a fleeing driver on Friday, June 17th, ending in a serious accident at a nearby gas station, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The details released in the police report allege that the deputy first noticed a car seemingly sitting in the middle of an intersection, around 2:00 A.M. A spokesman for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department told reporters that the deputy attempted to pull the Nissan over, but that the driver decided to flee the scene. Accelerating to what witnesses said may have been as much as one hundred miles per hour, the driver in the Nissan attempted to escape from the deputy, who barely had time to give chase before the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The Nissan allegedly spun out of control, going off the road and ending in a high-speed collision with a Chevron gas station pump. The force of the impact damaged the pump severely and broke the support structure holding up the roof awning, sending it crashing down onto the suspect’s vehicle.

Firefighters Rescue Trapped Driver And Passenger

Reacting quickly, firefighters arrived at the scene of the accident and put out a small fire that had started. They then carefully used a device, colloquially referred to as the ‘jaws of life’, to extricate the two from the wreckage. Their vehicle had been crushed between the collapsed awning and a pole, preventing them from exiting the vehicle through normal means.

According to authorities, the pair was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries their legs had sustained. Police also believe that the driver, a 30-year old man, was intoxicated at the time of the incident, though they are still waiting for results of a blood test to confirm.
