Police Chase DUI Suspect

After speeding away from a police officer, a driver crashed his vehicle into a nearby gas station, knocking the awning over and injuring himself and his passenger, the Sacramento Bee reports.

The incident began at about 2 a.m. on Friday, June 17th. According to the police report filed after the crash, a sheriff’s deputy noticed a Nissan parked in the middle of the street at an intersection near Sierra Highway and Newhall Avenue. The law enforcement officer approached in his patrol vehicle and tried to pull the car over, but the driver sped away, running a red light in the process.

Giving chase, the deputy flashed his lights and sirens at the car to signal it to pull over, but the Nissan merely accelerated, reaching speeds of as much as 100 miles per hour. Almost immediately afterwards, however, the driver lost control of his car and collided with a gas station pump at a nearby Chevron.

Out Of Control Vehicle Rams Into Station

Customers were captured by video cameras fleeing from the scene as the car smashed into the station. The force of the collision knocked the roof awning hanging over the pumps loose, causing it to collapse and fall onto the Nissan.

Both the 30-year old driver and his 30-year old female passenger were trapped inside the wreckage as a small fire began on the scene. Emergency response teams and firefighters arrived shortly thereafter, dousing the flames and using a special device known as ‘the jaws of life’ to lift the awning off the car, allowing the driver and passenger to be pulled from the remains of the vehicle.

After being extricated, the two crash victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of the injuries they sustained.
