Worker Killed in Construction Accident in Harlem

By Hochheiser & Hochheiser LLP  Mar. 26, 2012 1:04p

Construction workers were at the site of a Harlem building they were in the process of demolishing when tragedy struck. A portion of the building suddenly gave way unexpectedly and fell down on three construction workers in the immediate area. The three men were covered by thousands of pounds of brick, concrete and other debris from the part of the building that fell. Fellow workers rushed immediately to the area and began digging and removing debris to get them out. Emergency personnel arrived promptly and joined in the rescue efforts. The three were found and pulled out of the wreckage and rushed to a local hospital. Sadly, one man was pronounced dead upon arrival. The other two arrived in critical condition. Information on New York City Construction Accidents

Earlier this year, Mayor Bloomberg announced the construction accident statistics for 2011 in NYC along with other information concerning construction in the city. Most of the news was good and showed improvement from 2010. Construction activity increased by 8% while accidents decreased by nearly 20%. 128 accidents occurred last year resulting in 152 injuries and five deaths. While the number of fatalities from the year before was up by one, the total number of injuries was down by 7.8%. The Mayor stated that the overall decrease in construction site mishaps and injuries is most-likely due to the more strenuous safety rules that were put into effect a couple years ago. An indication of this is the over 5,100 stop-work orders that were issued by the New York City Buildings Department in regard to safety rule violations.
