17 Injured, 1 Killed in House Explosion

A toddler was killed and 17 others were injured recently when a home in a suburban Long Island neighborhood exploded. The explosion occurred on a recent weekday in the Brentwood area. The house was situated among a number of modest homes in a nice neighborhood. The force of the explosion completely leveled the house to a pile of wood and drywall and caused damage to nearby homes. Neighbors several houses away felt and heard the blast. A police officer seven blocks away heard the explosion and was the first on the scene. Another neighbor called 911. Neighbors rushed to help the officer rescue the home's occupants who were trapped under the collapsed walls, roof and various other building material and furniture. The policeman and others lifted up the roof as additional good Samaritans helped pull several seriously injured individuals out. An 18-month-old toddler was among the victims rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, despite the heroic efforts of rescuers on the scene and emergency medical personnel, the baby died at the hospital. Initial Investigation Focuses on Gas-Related Explosion

Investigators at the scene of the explosion stated that the cause was most likely due to some sort of gas leak. Two medium-sized (200 lb) propane tanks were on the property. None of the houses in the area are hooked up to natural gas nor do any gas lines go through the area. Investigators did not say why the propane tanks may have been present but that size has a variety of common uses. Reports have not indicated as yet if the tanks were defective or not. Suffolk County homicide investigators will be examining the property to determine what exactly caused the explosion.
