Three People Injured after Construction Barrier Collapse

By Hecht Kleeger & Damashek  Nov. 10, 2013 7:35a

Two women and a man were injured during a recent NYC downpour when a plywood wall at a construction site in Midtown Manhattan's Garment District fell onto the adjacent sidewalk. The three people were walking on a sidewalk near Times Square during severe wind and rain when the accident happened. A wall constructed of large plywood sheets and what appeared to be some sort of aluminum alloy supports had been put up in front of a store which was undergoing construction. Reports state that a strong gust of wind came up and then the wall toppled over onto the sidewalk and trapped three people underneath. Dozens of people near the scene saw the wall fall and came running over to help free the people underneath who could be heard calling for help. Fire fighters soon arrived on the scene and between the combined effort of the good Samaritans and fire rescue the victims were soon freed from the layers of heavy debris. The two women and the man had multiple bleeding cuts on their heads and bodies as well as other injuries. All three of the victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. If you were injured in a construction accident then consult with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney.

An official with the city Buildings Department stated that the construction wall had not been properly secured to the building. A stop-work order was immediately issued and the construction company doing the work on the ground floor of the building was cited for the safety violation. The company said that they are only working on the inside of the location and were not responsible for the construction that was being done on the outside. Investigators continue to inspect the scene and determine exact liability.
