Woman Awarded $400k for Nursing Home Negligence Case

This week, a woman from Easton who battled for multiple years to hold a nursing home accountable for the death and disfigurement of her stepfather was awarded $400,000 after a jury verdict.

76-year-old Marlene Owens said, "I feel like I got some closure and some justice for him" when talking about her stepfather who died in 2005 at the age of 93.

John J. Donahue's case was highlighted in March by the Herald in a two day series that examined the quality of care offered at nursing homes.  It is reported that 46 days after suffering a night injury at the Embassy House nursing home, Donahue died.

Plymouth Superior Court in Brockton ruled that negligence was a substantial contributing factor in the eye injury and awarded $400,000 plus interest for pain and suffering and disfigurement to Owens. However, they did not find that the nursing home was responsible for the elder's death.
