Truck Accident Victim Suffering from Brain Damage Awarded $61 Million

A jury in Northern California has awarded $61 million in a truck accident case that left the victim with permanent brain damage.

Drew Bianchi, a college student, was riding in the back of a Toyota Avalon when the car was rear ended by a semi truck. Just prior to hitting the car that Bianchi was riding in, the truck collided with another large truck.

As a result of the accident, Bianchi suffered permanent brain damage, and will likely require specialized care for the rest of his life.

The jury found the two truckers liable for $49 million in damages.  Bianchi's attorneys argued that the truckers were driving recklessly, which ultimately led to the accident. According the lawsuit, one of the truckers drifted across the center lane and the other trucker was texting while driving.

Before the case moved to trial, the state of California reached a settlement with Bianchi's family for $10 million. Bianchi's attorneys claim that Caltrans, a state-run transportation agency, failed to address known safety issues on the highway.
