City Sued By Family of Man Shot by Police

A wrongful lawsuit has been filed against the city of Rockford, Illinois by the guardians of a 23-year-old man who was fatally shot by Rockford police.

Mark Anthony Barmore was inside a church-run daycare full of children when he was fatally shot by Rockford police.  Now his legal guardians have a filed a lawsuit as a way to get more information about the incident, which occurred on August 24.

Barmore's family is seeking $50,000 or more in damages, and demanding a jury trial.

The city has said little about the incident, except that it remains under investigation and officials are committed to a fair process.

Police did say that Barmore, who is black, was struggling with two white police officers over a gun.  Police claim deadly force was necessary, while witnesses claim Barmore surrendered before he was shot.
