Texas Women File Lawsuits against Continental Airlines

News sources are reporting that two Texas area women have filed a lawsuit against Continental Airlines for an airplane accident that occurred at Denver International Airport in Colorado.  The women filing the lawsuit, Melissa Craft and Emily Pellegrini, claim that the pilot of the aircraft "negligently aborted" the flight shortly after it took off on December 20, 2008.

It is reported that after the pilot abandoned the plane, it veered off of the airport's runway into a ravine.  After entering the ravine, the airplane caught fire from a fuel leakage.  The right wing of the plane ruptured, leaked and then ignited.   The plane was carrying 110 passengers and 5 crew members who were scheduled to go to Houston, Texas.

While no one was killed during the accident, 38 passengers sustained serious injuries.  At this time, the National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the accident and circumstances surrounding the pilot's actions.

Craft, who is 25 years old, claims that she sustained a back injury during the crash.  She is suing for her back injury and for emotional trauma.  Pelligrini, who is 21 years old, claims that she could not undo her seatbelt when the plan abruptly caught fire.   She alleges that when she finally undid her seatbelt, she slipped and fell on leaking jet fuel while exiting the airplane, and that the fuel soaked all of her clothing.

The lawsuit lists Continental pilots, David Butler and Chad Levang, as co-defendants, but does not go into detail regarding how the aborted takeoff was negligent on their part.

Continental Airlines spokespeople say that the lawsuit is "premature" as the incident is still being investigated and will continue to be investigated for months to come.

The airline said, "Since the facts of the accident are still being investigated, the allegations are premature. We're prepared to defend the company's actions and those of our crew.
