Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed in Crandon - Wisconsin

In Crandon, Wisconsin, a wrongful death lawsuit was recently filed in a case involving a shooting rampage.  The only survivor and the parents of the 4 young children that were killed are filing a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the employer of the gunman, Crandon Police Chief John Dennee and Forest County Sheriff Keith Van Cleve.  The lawsuit is also being filed against both of the men's insurance companies.

According to news reports, an off-duty Forrest County Deputy Sheriff, Tyler Peterson shot and killed his girlfriend and five other victims on October 7, 2007.  After killing the victims, he killed himself.  The only survivor of the shootings was Charlie Neitzel, a plaintiff listed on the wrongful death lawsuit.

Earlier, both Wisconsin police departments denied claims from Charlie Neitzel and the family of the victim's who were killed.  The plaintiffs are asking for $5 million in damages, which has led to the filing of a civil lawsuit.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs are claiming that both police departments were aware that the gunman, Mr. Peterson, had an extensive history of violence.  Additionally, the lawsuit is alleging that the departments wrongfully gave Mr. Peterson access to weapons that were ultimately used in the killings.
