Looks Can Kill: Dangerous Beauty Products

While some beauty products are very safe, other chemicals can be harmful to your health. If you habitually use a dangerous product, then you may eventually suffer adverse effects as a result. One dangerous product is hair dye. In some cases, hair dye can have carcinogenic compounds or coal-tar derivatives which have been known to cause cancer. Now, all hair dye companies are required to put labels on any boxes of hair dye with dangerous compounds, and this has encouraged the product companies to reduce the amount of potentially harmful compounds that they use. Studies have shown that in most cases hair dyes cannot cause cancer, though there are evidences that excessive amounts of dye may harm pregnant woman so they are advised to stay away from the product during their term.

Another dangerous beauty product to watch out for is mascara. You may have heard of dangerous eye infections that occurred as a result of mascara, and these do happen on occasion. Still, experts suggest that by choosing the right mascara and avoiding sharing mascara with anyone else, you will be able to minimize the possibility of a painful eye infection. One of the most dangerous aspects of applying mascara actually has to do with putting on this product in the car. Every year, woman jab themselves in the eye and develop a corneal ulcer because they tried to apply mascara in a moving vehicle. In many of these cases the woman was not even driving, but hit herself in the eye when the driver had to slam on the brakes. Also, remember that mascara has bacteria fighting compounds that last about three months. Don’t ever keep a tube of mascara longer than this, and keep the makeup in a cool place to avoid the development of mascara in the bottle.

When it comes to shampoos, there are also dangers to watch out for. In the past, shampoo companies have been in the media because their products were full of cancer-causing sulfates. Sulfate is a chemical that can cause the suds that bubble up when you wash your hair. Scientists have also discovered that diethanolamine in some shampoos can cause cancer. This is an agent in shampoos that can boost the foaming action or neutralize the shampoo so that it won’t irritate the user’s scalp. Another study recently showed that tea tree oil and lavender oil, both common ingredients in shampoo, can lead to breast growth in boys. It is easy to avoid buying shampoos with these products if you are concerned about how they will affect your health in the future. Simply look at the ingredients on the shampoo or by all natural shampoos instead so that you will not have to run the risk of danger. Some tests by the National Toxicology Program say that the diethanolamine compounds in shampoo could not make difference in a person’s health unless the person was exposed to the compounds almost constantly.

As well, there may be health risks to using some deodorants. In the sixties, scientists discovered that aluminum which was used in antiperspirants can cause cell damage and can cause cancer by blocking the seat glands from expelling toxins within the body. There are also claims that the aluminum can cause Alzheimer’s, but these alleged rumors have been dispelled in recent years. As well, the Journal of Applied Toxicology claims that the use of parabens in underarm cosmetics may be attributed to breast cancer tumors. When you purchase deodorants, you should be careful to choose those brands that you can trust. If you believe that you have developed cancer as a result of a deodorant or antiperspirant then you may want to talk to a personal injury lawyer about a product liability lawsuit. There have also been rumors that perfumes contain phthalates which are chemicals that can bring on developmental abnormalities in humans.

Some nail polishes may also pose a danger to consumers. According to studies that say that DBP is bad for you, many nail polish companies chose to ban the use of the chemical in their products. As well, formaldehyde, which is used as a nail hardener, and toluene, which is an ingredient in nail polish fluid, has been known to increase a consumer’s risk of cancer and respiratory problems. If you have experienced the adverse effects of any of the above products, then you have the right to seek compensation. Contact a local personal injury attorney today to get more information about lawsuits and product liability.
